Overview
Gilgit – Baltistan Hunza & Skardu Valley Blossom & Autumn Tours
From Skardu, the road follows the Indus Gorge for about 100 km. As the valley widens, you are greeted with a view of Nanga Parbat. Shortly after the confluence of the Indus and Gilgit Rivers, you arrive in Gilgit, the main town of the Northern Areas. Here, the Karakoram Highway enters the Hunza Valley and continues north along the Hunza River. It is only at Karimabad that the narrow valley broadens, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks: Rakaposhi, Diran, Spantik, and Ultar, all towering over 7,000 meters.
The valley is well-irrigated and supports intensive farming. Hunza is also renowned for its apricots. Passing through the villages of Gulmit and Passu—where the Gulmit and Batura Glaciers nearly touch the road—you reach the trading post of Sost. The road then begins to climb, and the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. With a series of long switchbacks, you eventually reach the Khunjerab Pass at 4,788 meters. The journey from Gilgit to this point takes about six hours by jeep. In terms of scenic beauty, this drive is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular that can be experienced by car.
